Wireless Provider Sues Telemarketing Firms
What can a wireless provider do to stop telemarketers from illegally soliciting their customers? By bringing suit against the telemarking firms for an injunction and monetary damages in the Superior Court in Sacramento, CA and the Superior Court in Somerville, NJ, Verizon Wireless claims that it is "standing up once again for customer privacy rights".
In August 2004, Verizon Wireless won a permanent injunction against a group that was spamming Verizon Wireless customers with unsolicited text messages. This time, based on information that it collected from its customers and company employees who were the recipients of pre-recorded messages, Verizon Wireless has concluded and alleged that the two telemarketing firms have collectively made hundreds of thousands of cell phone calls to its customers in violation of the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act and state laws. The lawsuits, according to Verizon, are the first of their kind by a U.S. wireless provider against telemarketing firms.
