Financial Aid Files Compromised in Cal State Database Breach
On August 26, in accordance with California Information Practice Act (SB 1386), California State University sent a letter to 154 students and administrators notifying them of a potential data breach involving student financial aid records housed in the university chancellor's office.
According to the letter and a university web page specially created in connection with the incident, a virus was discovered on an administrator's computer on August 15. Subsequent monitoring showed that there was unauthorized access during the time between when the appearance of the virus and its later removal. While the school stressed that there was no evidence of actual theft of information, it advised those affected to take steps to address any fraudulent use of their personal information that might occur.
A similar incident occurred at another California State University campus four days previously involving the records of nearly 900 students, according to a university press release.
